Last night's WWE Raw results for 9/10/12 features a health scare involving Jerry Lawler, as well as a high-charged promo featuring John Cena, CM Punk, and Bret Hart. The closing tone of the show had emotions running high on a roller coaster ride ahead of Sunday's Night of Champions Pay-Per-View event.
The recent Raw results for the three-hour show featured multiple champions in action, as they prepared for Sunday's big PPV. It also included an impromptu tag team match featuring Jerry "the King" Lawler, after he got up from his commentary position to help fight CM Punk and Dolph Ziggler off Randy Orton. The ensuing brawl led to Raw GM AJ Lee booking Lawler and Orton vs. Ziggler and Punk, in what became a lopsided tag team match. It saw Lawler hitting some nice spots including a big suplex, and his patented diving fists from the corner. However, CM Punk walked out on the match, leaving a screaming Vickie Guerrero to watch as Dolph Ziggler was hit by Orton's RKO.
By the way, that match was originally voted on by the fans as CM Punk vs. Randy Orton in a non-title bout. There had been a Twitter poll run by WWE asking who CM Punk's opponent should be. The original choices were Brodus Clay, Jerry Lawler, or Randy Orton. Orton won the fan voting, but Lawler still ended up in a match. It looks like he might have been involved in a match if Brodus Clay won the vote as well. Later in the night, Lawler would collapse while providing commentary during a tag team match featuring Kane and Daniel Bryan against the Prime Time Players. It has now been reported that Lawler suffered a heart attack, which had him taken to a nearby hospital for tests and treatment.
With emotions running high, Michael Cole delivered on-camera updates about Lawler throughout the show but said out of respect he would no longer do commentary. That left the matches silent for the remainder of the show, which also included a heated promo with CM Punk and John Cena. Cena really delivered on this one, and one has to wonder if he drew upon the tough emotions he was feeling over the Lawler situation. Cena basically put Punk on notice that he thought he was a fake who hasn't discovered his identity. Along with that, Cena vowed to kick his butt and win the WWE title in Boston this Sunday. Punk tried for an attack on Bret "The Hitman" Hart, but got punched down before the close of the show. It was a great spot to sell that potential main event match on the PPV.
Other winners on the night included Bryan and Kane who earned themselves a tag team title opportunity on Sunday. R-Truth and Kofi Kingston defeated Antonio Cesaro and The Miz in a non-title match. A six divas match saw Eve pick up the win, irritating her partners Kaitlyn and Layla, who will be facing off on Sunday. Cody Rhodes defeated Rey Mysterio with some interference from The Miz, then hit his finisher on The Miz as well. Could a Triple Threat for the Intercontinental championship be set up for Sunday?
In all, the show was full of emotions once the Lawler news hit. They had also run some comedy segments during the night including a legal skit featuring David Otunga, Ricardo Rodriguez and Sheamus at a deposition of some sort at WWE headquarters. Sheamus stepped into the comedian role brilliantly, which made up for Santino Marella's usual slapstick antics being MIA. Also, the return of Dr. Shelby and the anger management situation featuring Kane and Bryan returned. It has many wondering why Dr. Shelby shouldn't become a manager for this tag team at Sunday's event and continue the fun of that series.
When all was said and done, it was a very emotional show, as fans and even the superstars or divas continued to wonder the status of Jerry Lawler. It is hoped that he is recovering from this health situation and will be back to commentary soon. As for getting in the ring, it's probably going to be debated whether he will ever do that in the future.
