Chicago. As the Chicago teachers strike enters its second day, union organizers have found themselves outgunned and outmaneuvered. When a popular mayor was joined by thousands of parents desperate to get their kids into non-union charter schools, plus both of the cityâ€™s two largest newspapers, the Chicago Teachers Union found itself in trouble. And itâ€™s only day 2.

shooting themselves in the foot? This is why all unions are out of control - more money, less work aka thieves.

Didnt I see somewhere that these teachers are some of the highest paid in this country but yet many of the students still cannot read? They sound as if they are half doing their job... That sounds like the pretend president... I am wondering which side of the fence , he will sit on ? The unions/teachers or the Mayors?

The teachers will loose this battle. They do NOT have the support of the public, and their demands are outrageous and unrealistic.

Chicago has always had one of the lowest graduation rates in the nation at roughly 50%. Over the past decade, they've raised it to the upper 50's. But it's still one of the worst educations a kid can get, unless you get lucky and get your kid into one of the rare "magnet" schools. That's how Chicago's education system works. A dozen magnet schools with 0 tolerance for crime, disruption, etc., and hundreds of regular schools for everyone else where they do little more than referee gang fights and babysit. The major sticking point right now isn't even the money. Rahm Emanuel wants the power to hire non-union teachers for public schools. The union wants its monopoly on CPU jobs left alone.
