School Rezoning

Just days after we got all excited about being settled in at the new school, my neighbor told me the bad news. The current school Kyleigh goes to is over-crowded and next school year, our community is being re-zoned to a different elementary school. Not only will Kyleigh (and myself) have to re-learn all the routines and rules, but the new school is also several miles away in the opposite direction from my work (while the current school is between my house and my work). Needless to say, I am really not thrilled at all. Due to the increased distance, the school bus will also have to depart earlier, which means even earlier mornings for us. Kyleigh's current Day Care (which serves as her after-school care) will not provide transportation from the new school, so I will have to find a new Day Care. I will also have to leave work earlier to pick her up.

I can only hope that the school will be more organized (than the current school) and maybe the teachers will be more experienced, so it will be worth the pain to switch.

Now, you should have the option of staying in your current school, IF you provide transportation.

It's not that big of a deal though. Christopher ended up at 4 elementary schools and Angela 3...we've been redistricted several times.

I have the option to submit a request but both schools have to approve it. I was told it's slim chance because the reason for the re-zoning is to reduce the size of the current school.

You might visit the other school and see what you think of it (if you haven't already). It may not be the worst thing in the world to happen...or if it seems to be, maybe you can advocate for Kyleigh to stay where she is.

I have not and I am planning on it. I still have a year until it happens, although I know the registration starts in March so it's not a whole year out. The new school may end up being better, but I hate to spend more time commuting.

I hate it when people (and especially kids) are treated like numbers instead of individuals with real lives and needs.

Ick! My nephew is in the third grade this year and its his 3rd school already. He wants to just stay at one place already.

That stinks. Like Janet said, you should have the option to send her to the one she currently attends. I know many individuals who had their kids attend elementary schools outside their district (even 30 minutes away!)

The issue is getting approved by both schools, which is not easy.

That's pretty crappy. At least you guys have time to figure it out and it's not sprung upon you. I had that happen. 3rd grade I was in one school.Then 4th another further away.Then back to the same school previously for 5th grade. That's not counting all the moving and previous schools during my lifetime. Things will work out.

I personally have never changed school in the middle (not counting from Elementary to High school type of change, of course).

it'shard on kids being pulled from school to school but in your case it makes harder on the parent..kids seem to adapt rather easily.

We'll see. She's pretty attached to the current school. She tells me how much she likes the current school every day. I hope she'll like the new school and not get attached to the current school too much.
