This Labor Day Weekend has been a busy one for the rumor mill. Celebrities Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy, Rihanna and Bill Nye have all been rumored to have died. They are all, in fact, alive.
One death that is not a rumor, however, is that of the founder of the Unification Church, Reverend Sun Myung Moon. He died in the early morning hours of September 3rd at his home in South Korea. He was 92. His funeral will be held on September 15th. Believing the area to be sacred, Reverend Moon will be buried on Mount Cheonseong in the northern South Korean province of Gyeonggi.
Officially founded in the 1950s, the Unification Church membership peaked in the 1970s. The church holds that Jesus was divine but not God. Reverend Moon claimed that Jesus had visited him in the 1930s and that he (Reverend Moon) needed to finish Jesus' mission.
Reverend Moon had been in poor health recently and had spent time in the intensive care unit of the local hospital. Ahn Ho-yeol, a church official, listed among the reasons for Moon's death "morning prayers which caused respiratory disease."
The Unification Church will continue operating under the leadership of Sun Myung Moon's son, Rev. Hyung Jin Moon.
