What kind of fruit is this?

I was taking pictures over the weekend. I seen this. I think it is a fruit. But have no clue what it is. Any ideas? Can you tell me anything about it?

I took in Northwest Ohio at the Independence Damn.

It almost looks like a horse chestnut before it pops open...but I think they have spikes on their skins. Sorry I can't be of any help in identifying it. <-(

These are Bois D'Arc apples. Another name is Osage Orange, or Horse Apples. They are not edible, they do not have a nut inside. The wood of this tree is very strong and flexible and was used to make arrows and bows in the early history before our country was a country. There is some thought that the smell of them will repel insects. Some people put them under their houses if they do not have a basement to keep critters away.

Heather E. is correct, this is an Osage Orange also known as a Hedge Apple. Some crafty people slice them and dry them to mount for dried flower arrangements. Pioneers cultivated a hedgerow of them to keep livestock in and predators out. The wood has a distinctive orange coloration too and was used by the Native Americans to make very springy bows. They have many seeds one inside each bump of the apple, squirrels love these and they are edible, just a lot of work to get to the tiny seeds!

We always called them hedge apples and as a kid I used to climb the hedge apple trees by our property. I've been told that if you throw a few of them under the crawl space of your house it will repell spiders, etc. but never tried that to find out.

Hedge apples is what we call them too. There is a couple just down the road from me. Definitely not edible.

It is an Osage Orange and I've never know anyone who eats them. They grow in hedge rows in Kansas and Missouri but have seen them used as Christmas decorations here in Canada - go figure. While living in Kansas and Missouri I was told they are very sour - and that pigs liked them... Don't know if that true but that is what I was told.
