Tasha Harmon, who allegedly stabbed her 6-year-old daughter, Adrianna, and then herself nearly a week ago, has told investigators that the stabbings were part of a 'spiritual cleaning' performed at the bequest of Jesus himself. Harmon is currently held at the Dane County Jail in Wisconsin on $500,000 bond and will face a preliminary hearing for attempted first-degree intentional homicide on Thursday.
The harrowing night for both Tasha and Adrianna began on the evening of August 12th when the mother claims she heard loud breathing from beneath the little girl's bed. Tasha then brought Adrianna to the bedroom to pray, and then the mother felt God "leading me all over the house, to clean the house" in a "spiritual cleaning."
During this religious cleansing, Harmon began to hear voices prompting her to stab Adrianna, so she grabbed a steak knife from the kitchen and began to do so. The voices, however, told the mother the wounds were "not deep enough," so Tasha continued to inflict stab wounds on her daughter, then turned the knife on herself. Adrianna was stabbed seven times in total, three times in the chest and four times in the back, and Tasha sustained knife injuries to her chest and throat. It now appears that both mother and daughter will recover.
What could possibly prompt a mother to do such a thing to their child? Such things don't simply happen in a vacuum, and a bizarre form of religiosity appears to play a role. Tasha Harmon wasn't always the most religious of persons, but she recently enrolled in online classes through Liberty University to enter the ministry. Prior to her conversion to Christianity, Tasha had a somewhat checkered past, but it seemed that religion would help lead her in a better direction. Only last month, she tweeted, "I hate who I used to be, but that's not the newer me! Thank you Jesus for freeing me!!!"
Fortunately, that fateful night didn't turn out worse for Adrianna. Although she is still in critical condition, she is now "talking and improving" according to Lt. Todd Stetzer. As of yet, Harmon's family declines comment on the case. It can only be hoped that everyone affected by this terrible event will be able to deal with it in the best way to benefit Adrianna when she recovers.
