The first practical fountain pen was manufactured in the United States in 1884. Like all fountain pens since, it had four basic parts, a barrel to hold the ink, a point for writing, a feed bar that supplied ink to the point, and a cap to protect the point and keep the ink from drying up when it was not being used.
To fill the writing instrument, the user had to unscrew the point and drop ink into the barrel with an eyedropper. This was a messy chore, but they held enough ink for a great deal of writing, so they did not need to be filled often. By the 19th century and 1950 most pens were filled by the use of a lever on the side of the barrel. The lever squeezed a rubber sac and when it was released the sac expanded and sucked up the ink.
Since 1950 two other methods of filling them have become common. One method is an ink cartridge is put into the barrel. The other method is its filled with many tubes or channels. When the pen is set into the ink, the channels suck up the ink by capillary action.
