(1990) The Magellan reaches Venus. It was one of the first probes launched from the space shuttle.

(1988) Matt Bionde swims a world record in the 100 meter.

(1966) The first U.S lunar orbiter is launched on this day.

(1949) Truman signs the National Security Act replacing the Department of War with the Department of Defense.

(1923) Nancy Buckingham, romance novelist is born.

(1869) The motion film projector is patented on this day.

(1846) The U.S. Congress charters the Smithsonian. The "Nations Attic," was made possible with a 500,000 dollar donation from English scientist Joseph Smithson.
