The 50 Shades of Grey movie has a rather long list of fan favorites for the role of Christian Grey, but there are a few names that pop up more than others.
Examples would be Matt Bomer, Ian Somerhalder, Alexander Skarsgard, and Chris Hemsworth. However, according to a recent poll, a rather surprising actor is currently tied with one of the most popular choices.
Lately it has looked like White Collar star Bomer is one of the heaviest favorites for the role, with Vampire Diaries hunk Somerhalder being pretty equally matched as far as fan campaigning goes. However, according to the YourTango poll, right now 50 Shades of Grey fans are torn between Ian and Christian Bale.
Somerhalder and Bale are currently tied with 33 percent of the vote, with Matt Bomer and Robert Pattinson competing for third place with 17 percent each. Of course the bizarre poll numbers could simply be the result of a low number of people voting.
So what is it about Christian Bale that has women voting for him just as much as they're voting for Ian Somerhalder and more than Bomer and Robert Pattinson? It could be because he shares the same first name as Christian Grey, or maybe it's because he has so much experience playing hot rich guys—he played a sadistic, narcissistic businessman in American Psycho (although his twisted fantasies were far worse than Fifty's), and he stars as crime-fighting billionaire Bruce Wayne in the recent Batman movies. If you think about it, the Dark Knight is a little kinky—he likes to wear a mask and plays with some pretty dangerous toys.
However, Bale is 38 years old, which is 10 years older than Christian Grey. He showed that he's no longer a spring chicken in The Dark Knight Rises, so it's hard to imagine him competing with younger guys like Ian for the part. But he probably would have been perfect for it back when he starred in American Psycho.
And in case you're wondering, American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis is no longer campaigning to write the screenplay for the 50 Shades movie—according to him, he's been told that he's no longer on the list of screenwriters being considered for the job.
So what do you think—is Christian Bale too old to play Christian Grey?
