Re the last quote by Reich. The Vietnam war protests are a good example of how the people can change things.

That's why they fear bringing back the draft. If they did so, we would be out of Afghanistan in a New York minute. It's easier to get kids to join the military when they can't find a job anywhere else, & they can also hire mercenaries to do their dirty work for them. No objections from the people when they do that.

That is the picture at which few want to look. They are afraid that if they started the draft again it would create the hippie movement. LOL

Periods of violence can usually be traced to rather specific things. In the 1920's the Depression was starting and people were losing their livelihood. In the late 1960's and 1970 there was the Vietnam War and there was the civil rights movement. Today, most people have failed to understand any of the history of the 1930's, and that is driving the U.S. into a deeper depression. President Obama came out with a stimulus plan just after he was sworn into office, but that plan, while on time, was too small by the time that Congress got through with it. It has staved off the rapid decent, but now, with the Republicans in control of the House and using the filibuster in the Senate, there is no hope for further stimulus. Notice that the termination of teachers police, fire fighters, etc. has almost equaled the new jobs created, so basically the economy is stagnate.
Anyone who knows any history from the 1930's knows that broad based stimulus is the only way to get out of an economic collapse. Actually, anyone with any real understanding of economics could just look at the failure of austerity in Europe as a cure for depressions, and they would know, as it appears France is learning, that you tax the rich and spend on infrastructure to employ people. The spending on infrastructure not only employs those people directly, it employs tens of thousands more in providing the materials needed for the building, roads, bridges, etc.
