I'm guessing a hate crime? If you are a white guy, you do not shoot up a Sikh temple just because you admire their turbans.

Hey idiot, A Sikh is not a Muslim. Okay, I am assuming that you were looking for Muslims. But it's not a stretch for me to assume that. Lots of Americans hate Muslims. Thanks for that, Michele Bachmann & Co.

Sadly. I suppose the News will explain this to the ignoramus faction over the next few days. but they don't read , and it won't get much play on Fox, so the ignorance may persist.

Is there evidence this specific crime was directed against Muslims? From your link:

"The Washington-based Sikh Coalition has reported more than 700 incidents in the U.S. since 9/11, which advocates blame on anti-Islamic sentiment."

This news brings tears to my eyes, because I have been blessed with the opportunity to work closely with Sikhs for a substantial period of time. One of them was one of the best bosses I've ever had. Others were quite kind to me. And to be honest, some of them were homophobic - just like the rest of society.

To be self-critical: before that, I did not want to look Sikhs in the eyes or engage them. This type of ingorunce is common in inter-group dynamics - exposure is important.

I am reluctant to make this a political attack on Bachmann. As a gay who sees Muslims in other countries maltreating women & gays, I am also afraid of Muslims.

But I also agree with Lebrea T. here on Gather that they not be scapegoated. Quite a balancing act.

I'm left hoping thaT I am wrong, Hyper, a common situation for me here. What a relief it would be to discover that the guy was just random, that it has nothing to do with the turbans or the beards. I'll apologize to Michele if that ends up being the case.
though frankly I think Michele has a lot worse stuff for which she should apologize to me.......

I hope you don't mean to imply that shooting up a mosque would have been acceptable! (I don't think you do).

Do they know yet if this was hate crime? (it's a good guess) The news is pretty fresh. I think the cops wers still trying to put all the pieces together.

So far, there are 6 killed members of the Sikh congregation, plus one dead shooter. the dead shooter was gunned down by a brave police officer who sustained several bullet wounds but who is so far surviving. several other Sikhs were injured by the shooter, perhaps critically. my guess is that there was only one attacker, but that may become clear soon.

As you say, Margaret, it would equally bad for someone to shoot up a Mosque as an expression of religious hatred.
I almost prefer crazy (as in the (Aurora shooting) to hate, which I suspect as the cause of this one.

Here in Virginia, I live several miles from a Sikh-owned gas station that was destroyed in an arson crime shortly after 9/11. Dumb, but it happens.

The dead shooter apparently had two semi-automatic handguns with him. it's now being described as a domestic terrorist event by federal officials, and the FBI investigators are being sent.

Wade Michael Page, age 40, was the shooter. He was an army vet. According to one source, he was a white supremacist. He had a "9/11" tattoo on one arm.

I have not yet encountered any facts to tell me I am wrong.
