I think that if the voters show some sense this time, and put the Republicans out to pasture, that the next step might be "medicare for all." Let those who wish to buy their own insurance, but let the smart ones buy into medicare.
There are lots of big money interests who would rather have hundreds of thousands of people die than give up some of their wealth. Some of them run the health insurance industry. It won't happen until collapse and many will die from that collapse.
If we simply allowed everyone under retirement age to buy into Medicare at a price determined by costs to the system, we would be improving Medicare and the lives/health of people who need medical care. If private health insurers want to keep customers, they would have to compete by offering better services.
In the U.S. Federal Government the Congress only takes large steps when it hurts the middle class and the poor. Otherwise, just baby steps are taken, and the people have to keep pushing for improvement. The Affordable Care Act was one of the largest steps taken in years, now the people will have to keep pushing for improvements to it. Parents able to keep there children on the parent's policies until the child is 26, women no longer treated as being female is a "pre-existing" condition which requires about 15% more premium, not being able to cap your coverage, not being able to drop you when you get ill, the expansion of Medicare and Medicaid, the forming of low rate exchanges, and several other improvements are all good. Now it has to be made better.
The Affordable Care Act is the 1st step in the 1000 mile journey to Medicare for all, George. It won't happen in our lifetime, particularly with a partisan, divided Congress for the forseeable future.....
