Chapter One
“You see then, I was no dreamer you awoke from sleep.” She said as she pulled the knife from the dark figure’s back and wiped the blade on my shirt. She carefully sheathed the knife back into her belt and proceeded to walk out into the night. I took one last look at the figure on the floor, which had already proceeded to decay and quickly followed the slayer out of the house and into the darkness.
I had finally opened up my eyes and seen the world for what it really was. The constant battle between good and evil was all around us and we only have to open our minds and inner eye to see it, the slayer or Elena, as I knew her, had taught me that. From the moment I met her, I knew she was different and that she would change my life forever.
Chapter Two
When I first met Elena, she was a patient in the psychiatric ward I worked, as an orderly, in. In spite of her sudden bursts of anger and violent outbursts, she was the most beautiful and intelligent woman I had ever met. It felt like an instance, when I realized I had fallen in love with Elena. It was this intense love and a small gesture on my part that led to the fight for our lives that had just occurred moments ago.
I discovered that it was Elena’s birthday and had sneaked in a birthday cake and candles. As we celebrated her special day, as I called it, Elena confined in me that she knew that Doctor Brooks was a demon. She pleaded with me to help her escape and get back to her home where she knew she would be safe. I don’t know if it was her tears or the tone in her voice but I suddenly wished to help her. I didn’t believe her stories of demons and a race of people destined to be demon hunters, but I did feel a great sense of love and a need to help her. So that night I snuck her out and we fled into the moonless night.9
Chapter Three
It was a long and hard drive but by mid morning we had arrived at our destination. Through our long talks and meetings I had learned of a cottage Elena’s family had on the outskirts of New Orleans. As we drove up the long driveway, a sudden shiver ran down my spine. I looked over to my passenger who was fast asleep and felt even a stronger desire to protect her. We unloaded all of our supplies, which I purchased on our last fill up. As Elena proceeded to store our groceries I took the time to look around the cottage.
There were many pictures of Elena and other people I assumed were family members. As I looked over picture after picture I notice one running theme they all had in common. It seemed that guns, rifles and all manner of knives and swords were brandished and enthusiastically displayed by the people in the portraits and pictures.
A sudden shout of “Dinner is ready” broke me from my deep thought. I walked into the kitchen and we proceeded to eat and drink a cheap bottle of wine I had purchased with our groceries. As we enjoyed our dinner we broke into small talk, both staying away from anything that might lead to how we had arrived at current situation. Eventually we finished our meal. We got up and walked into the living room, bringing the bottle of wine with us. I had lit the fireplace when we had first arrived and now the living room was nice and warm. We sat on the couch and slowly drank our glasses of wine and before I knew it we were in a passionate embrace. This was what I had wanted from the moment I had first laid my eyes on Elena. This was what I had wished for since I first felt her gaze upon me.
Suddenly a knock on the door broke us apart. “Go to the back” I whispered ordering Elena to hide. I walked to the door and cautiously opened it. To my surprise the figure in the door was Doctor Brooks. I stood in the doorway, just staring and stunned for hours it seemed when a voice “Aren’t you going to invite me in” broke my spell. I looked behind me and made sure Elena could not be seen. “Sure Doctor come on in,” I said trying to hide the tremble in my voice. “Doctor Books what are you doing here?” I asked not knowing was else to say. “John we both know what I am doing here” He said with a low growl and anger spewing fourth from his mouth. I turn my back to him and took a step when suddenly I felt a sharp pain on my shoulder. I spun around and met not Doctor Brooks but a tall dark figure whose only real feature I could distinguish was the long sharp fangs that protruded from where a mouth should have been. I struggled to get away at the same time shouting “ Run Elena, Get out” I struggled and fought with all my might but I could feel my strength failing me. Suddenly I found my self on the floor. The monstrous being on top of me as his fangs sank deeper into my flesh. Suddenly I heard “Die demon die” and with that the darkness fell away from me. I struggled as I dragged myself off the floor and thank god for giving back my life. I looked around and instantly saw Elena standing over a large black mound.
(I wrote this about 6 years ago. It was an attempt to express how Elena affected my life. I felt that she woke me up from a deep sleep.)
