From her 1st event, the vault in which she scored an impressive 15.966, you could tell 16 year-old Gabby Douglas was in it to win it. And, that's precisely what she did~captured a Gold Medal in the Women's Gymnastics All-around competition, and made history doing it. Gabby became the 1st African American Olympian to win the All-around title, and only the fourth American, joining the ranks of Mary Lou Retton in 1984, Carly Patterson in 2004 and Nastia Liukin in 2008.
Nicknamed "The Flying Squirrel," she led throughout the competition with her top-scoring 2 & 1/2 twisting vault, high-flying aerial tricks on the uneven bars, incredible performance on the balance beam and an equally impressive floor exercise routine. But there was drama on the last event when Russian gymnast, Victoria Komova, performed a near perfect floor exercise, yet tearfully had to settle for silver.
Â
The road to gold hasn't been easy for Gabby, who hails from Virginia Beach, convinced her Mom to let her move to Iowa to train with a highly respected coach and live with a host family. She's already signed an endorsement deal with Procter & Gamble just prior to the Olympics, and a marketing analyst projects her earnings could net the teen between $9-10 mil. WTG Gabby & Congrats!!!
