It's quite common for Mormons to baptize family members who could not be baptized while they were alive. It's part of their church traditions. There's nothing at all wrong with doing so. Such a practice harms no one. Different denominations have different points of emphasis and different ways of conducting their affairs.

I think Hal may be referring to the baptising of people/the dead who were not members of the faith. If you are a religious person and for instance a Roman Catholic, wouldn't you object to being re-baptised into another religion after death?( or maybe even sneakily in life)
Personally it means nothing to me in terms of any difference it will make but it seems the Mormon's want to baptise everybody in the world ( and out of it ) in order to save our souls after armegeddon. Maybe you get bigger discounts for party bookings?
I remember some years ago a friend interested in genealogy being asked if he wanted to buy a book with a list of all the members of his family in the world. Naturally he said yes and sent for it. It turned out to be a listing by the Mormon Church of everyone with his shared surname all over the world but not necessarily related to him. A clever marketing ploy to raise funds, to get names for baptisms or what? Is there really a super computer in a cave somewhere in Salt Lake City carrying the names of all those regarded as Mormon by TCoJC&LDS most of whom would be unaware of their supposed allegiance? It just wouldn't surprise me at all.

Larry, David is correct, hundreds of thousands of dead non morman christian & jewish souls have been re- baptized by mormans without permission of the people when they were alive or the families after death, This has been done on a continuing basis since the 1840's. Its also called Baptizm by Proxy. Anne frank & many other holacast victims, catholic saints and Popes as well as lay catholics as well as dead christians of many denominations have also been re-baptizes after their death & without permission.
