The 50 Shades of Grey movie cast list of ideas just keeps getting longer and longer—soon there will be no actors and actresses left under age 35 who haven't been suggested for the roles of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.
Ryan Gosling seems to be a favorite for the role of Christian, if the press is to be believed, but Fifty fans seem to be more interested in Matt Bomer right now. Policymic has listed Gosling as its pick for the part, along with a very intriguing choice for the role of Ana, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara.
Rooney stripped down for some pretty difficult sex scenes in Dragon Tattoo, so it's easy to see why she's a top choice—the actress who gets cast as Ana will probably have to be okay with filming nude scenes. She also sported lots of painful-looking piercings to play Lisbeth Salander, and her character's nipple piercings could even be called more hardcore than Christian's nipple clamps. Since the 50 Shades of Grey movie is being produced by the team behind The Social Network, which Rooney Mara starred in, this could give her a solid shot at winning the part.
However, it's hard to imagine softie Ryan Gosling as her Christian Grey. Rooney would probably need someone darker and edgier to play off, like True Blood hunk Alexander Skarsgard or Shame actor Michael Fassbender. Michael might be much older than the billionaire businessman who seduces college student Anastasia Steele, but there are plenty of women who wouldn't complain if he gets cast as Christian. He also has no issue with filming nude scenes.
If the producers wanted to go with someone else from The Social Network, they could always cast Armie Hammer. After playing a doofus prince in Mirror, Mirror, he's probably ready to play a darker character.
Judging from the way Rooney comes off in interviews, she may see the 50 Shades movie as something she's above doing. Despite its popularity, the erotic novel based on Twilight fanfic has been panned by critics. Twilight was once in a similar situation, and just like the Twilight films, this movie might end up appealing mainly to fans of the book. Right now Rooney seems to be more interested in working on movies that could get critical acclaim since she's set to work with directors like Spike Jonze and Terrence Malik. She'll actually star alongside Gosling in Malik's next movie, and she'll get to work with another Christian Grey favorite, Magic Mike star Channing Tatum, in Steven Soderbergh's The Bitter Pill.
So do you think that Rooney could play Ana?
