The Team USA men's gymnastics team started off the 2012 Summer Olympics in great style with a nice 275.342 showing to take first place overall. That score is just short of three points ahead of Russia. The closest 
country in the U.S. session was Japan, almost five points behind.
Team USA features two starters from the University of Oklahoma with three reserves also representing the Sooners in the Olympic games. Both starters, Jonathan Horton (horizontal bar) and Jake Dalton (floor exercise), advanced to the individual event titles while Team USA advanced to the team finals.
Horton won the 2008 Olympics silver medal on the high bar, competing for the team that took the bronze medal. In four events in 2012, Horton scored 56.565 in four events, with the second-highest score in the horizontal bar. Dalton won the bronze medal at the 2011 Worlds in Tokyo. In 2012, he scored 46.633 in three events, with the highest score in the floor event and second-highest score in both the still rings and vault events.
Danell Leyva and John Orozco competed in all six events, scoring 91.265 and 90.597, respectively. Sam Mikulak competed in four events, scoring 75.348 for the United States Olympics men's team.
The biggest surprise in the 2012 Summer Olympics men's gymnastics competition was the problems that Japan faced. Normally a powerhouse in the competition, Japan is fifth overall after three-time world champion Kohei Uchimura committed several errors. Kazuhito Tanaka also made four errors in his first three events.
