THROUGH A WINDOW DARKLY: A QUICK TOUR OF...

As many of you know, I like taking photos through windows from the inside. The shadows lend themselves to a nice contrast. I only wish I had taken more. Here are a few that survived a sloppy photographer.

Did you notice that there are a lot of stairs in Montreal and Quebec? That, plus the hills, well, the mountain in Montreal, help keep people healthy!

I love the winding staircase....

Quebec, as you know, has a world famous staircase known as, "The Breakneck Staircase." Fifty-nine steps separating Lower and Upper Quebec." For the feint of heart there is a tramway, I have a photo, that takes you up. Jamie recently had foot surgery and still demanded to take the stairs and then a winding hill to the Chateau Frontenac. She paused several times, but made it to the top. A testament to her tenacious attitude.

Wow, what a great attitude. Yep, the stairs, and also the tram.

Never have taken the tram. Really need to go back to Quebec Ville.

We had absolutely delicious crepes at the restaurant outside Frontenac. Sort of expensive, but real French crepes.

Montreal has La Creperie Bretonne on St. Laurent, which also offers great crepes.

American chains like Magic Pan are terrible. And some malls have a Korean creperie, which are huge, thick crepes stuffed with stuff, not at all French.

One of the photos above is the St-Paul Creperie on Rue St-Paul. It's upstairs and a find. They serve beautiful crepes at reasonable prices and the coffee was delicious.

I took several window shots in NYC. I think this is my favorite. You have some interesting shots. I usually avoid snapping pictures through windows, I usually only get glare from the flash.

Turn off the flash if possible or block it with your hand. Sometimes there is nothing you can do to avoid certain reflections.

I do turn off the flash now. It took me several years before I thought of it. I always have the camera on auto focus and thought it needed the flash if it went off. One day I was getting so much glare on a picture no matter what I did, I just turned the flash off and it took a great photo.

You have a great eye for 3D form and an ability to use light and dark to show it off. #2 might work in B&W as well.
