Team GB cycling team

The Tour de France is over, and two British riders in first and second will surely be a boost for Team GB cycling at the London Olympics this year. Now a Tour de France winner, and on top of the Olympic golds he already has, surely that’s Bradley Wiggins’ knighthood sewn up now.

So, the British team now has the Tour de France winner, the second placed rider, and the current World champion, not to mention Sir Chris Hoy and the rest who will be aiming to repeat their feats of 2008, and it all started twenty years ago when Chris Boardman and Graeme Obree set up against each other to compete for the hour record.

The Olympics of 2004 and 2008 were just a fruition of the Boardman/Obree competition in the 1990s, and as each year passes, the Team GB Cycling Team get stronger and stronger. With the Tour de France in the bag as well now, with British riders in first and second places, the future of cycling in Britain is going to explode and only get even better over the next few decades.

They are a golden generation at present, but it is these things that inspire the children to get on their bikes and take it more seriously. It is not even that expensive to get started - it’s only when you start to get near national and world championships that you need to be sponsored in your training. Most of us won’t get that far, but I for one, would much prefer it if my kids were out on bicycles, rather than on a PlayStation or Wii game.

The medal haul in 2008 put Team GB Cycling top of the medals board in the cycling discipline - in fact, ‘top’ is underselling their achievement - they trounced everybody. I expect that the team should beat that haul from 2008 - as a reminder, that was eight gold medals out of the nineteen that GB won in total. Their competitions are the among the first to be contested as well, so a good medal haul again would only serve as inspiration for the rest of the British Olympic team, not that they should need it, it being in London.

They will also, undoubtedly, be an inspiration for the next generation who, after this summer, will be badgering their parents to buy them some Team GB cycling kit.
