Several MLB teams are looking for help before the trade deadline on the 31st and the NY Mets are one of those clubs as they look to add depth with another catcher.
Kelly Shoppach has become expendable with Boston youngster Ryan Lavarnway playing well in Triple-A. The latest from the NY Post has the NY Mets showing interest in the Red Sox backup and for good reason. The 32-year-old is having a very good year at the plate and his defensive skills make him a good option with the deadline quickly approaching.
Shoppach is hitting 0.274 this season with five homers and 14 RBI with just over 100 at-bats this season. His power numbers are decent for a backup, but his game-calling skills and experience make him the top trade option among catchers that are reportedly available this season.
The NY Mets are still in the race for an MLB playoff spot and adding experience from this former second round draft pick will only help down the stretch of the year and could become the difference between watching the post-season at home and playing in October.
