Ramadan…So Why Do I Give A Damn……?
Supposedly I am living in a nation that is open to all religions, after all we were founded by folks seeking religious freedom. Now however we are getting bombarded by “fundamentalist Islamic” diatribes exhorting us to; not eat pork because it offends Muslims when we do so, not to allow women to wear shorts or to go in public with their hair uncovered, etc. My take on this is that these fundamentalist Muslims need to do one of tow things. Either, shut the Hell up & go about their business or get the Hell out of MY country…!
I like bacon, ham, pork chops & I truly do enjoy seeing gals in shorts, with their hair blowing in the breeze…! If Muhammad or Mustafa do not like then they can turn their heads, leave when I eat or suffer my wrath…!
Ramadan, the month long fast that symbolizes the tortuous trek of Mohammad, is now upon us. This morning I ordered breakfast at one of my favorite eateries. I ordered eggs, BACON, grits, toast & tea. In the next booth there were 4 people, a man, 3 women & a child. The women were all swathed in black . The man got up and came to my table and asked me to either leave the restaurant or to move to an area where he & his wives could not see me eat as my order with the bacon was offensive to him. I asked him if he was citizen of the USA. He said that hew was not nor were any of his wives. I told him that I was not only a citizen but a disabled veteran, a native of the state (Florida), and as such I had the right to eat what I wanted, where I wanted and that he & his wives could move or leave as they saw fit. I also offered to share my bacon with them…..! Yes…I am that kind of guy…! I love to rub salt into wounds..!
He responded wit I probably did not understand what I was saying to him so I gave him chapter & verse about his religion including the FACT that no where in his Holy book, the Koran, does it say that women must cover up their heads, faces, hair, etc. I also explained to him what both the fundamental Jews & Muslims think pork is unclean and about the ease with which pork spoils when it is un-refrigerated…! He called me “Shaitan (Satan)..….! He turned and then ordered (in Arabic) his family to leave the presence of Shaitan..! I waved bye to them as they left….! The waitress came over and thanked me…! Other patrons also came over and thanked me…! Seems that before I got there these folks had caused a problem by demanding that anyone eating pork products leave the restaurant..!
As world traveler for many years as well as a PhD in anthropology I do indeed understand much more than the average person about all of this but I also am sick & tired of these medieval-minded, fundamentalist Muslims thinking that they can order the entire world to follow their religion…! How about you? What do you think about all of this?

That said, I also don't think Fundamentalists of any religion should be telling other people what to do or not do, based on their religion. If The United States could agree to that - there would be much less strife between the citizens...
Not allowed :-)
Our National Holiday Oct 3rd is also the Day of the Open Mosque and everyone interested is invited to go there, be shown round, and the Muslim Community will spend this public holiday showing us round, answer our questions etc. We were there last year, my husband had never been to a Mosque before and we enjoyed it. In my old hometown the Protestant Church and the Muslims did a Week of Brotherhood so they visited our Churches and even went to a Sunday Service and we Christians explored the many Mosques in the suburb where I lived. Even I didnt know there are so many.
It was such a lovely week.
You will sure criitcize me but when I go to a Muslim supermarket cause I love Turkish cookies (please read over that as I am diabetic and should not have them), I wear a sweatshirt, and when we go to eat out at our Neighbours Place who are Greek Muslims I also wear a Sweat shirt most of the time with the arms covered.
And now for Ramadan I will send some Electronic Greeting Cards tomorrow to some friends.
See I have Muslim Friends also here in Town and during Ramadan I will just eat at our neighbours place in the evening when its dark already and they are also allowed to eat. I would find it cruel that they cook for us and are probably fasting same time.
Before anyone starts mocking, NO I dont wear a scarf but I respect them and found some really nice friends who have helped us move our stuff, been the best neighbours in the world etc.
