A suicide bomber killed eight people in a bus transporting Israeli tourists in Bulgaria. Over 30 people were wounded. Israel believes that Hezbollah militants backed by Iran are responsible for the terrible attack.
After examining the scene, it was found that the bomber, described as wearing Bermuda shorts and a backpack, was in possession of a fake driver's license from Michigan, according to the Chicago Tribune. Why would an alleged member of Hezbollah have a United States Driver's License?
Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said the bus driver and the bomber were among those killed, in addition to the Israeli tourists, who had just gotten onto the bus from a charter flight. Some of the injured flew back to Israel on Thursday. What a terrifying experience for these poor travelers, who were only trying to enjoy a holiday.
Israelis have recently been targeted in attacks outside their country; particularly in Delhi, India, Bangkok, and Thailand. A similar foiled attack took place in Bulgaria earlier this year. One regularly hears anti-Semitic rhetoric coming from Iran, Egypt and other countries in the Middle East. Unfortunately, anti-Semitism is on the rise in the United States as well.
Two badly injured Israeli tourists were taken to hospitals in Bulgaria's capital, Sofia. A woman was in intensive care "with head and chest injuries" and a man was "in a critical state with burns covering 55 percent of his body."
The article stated that "body parts were strewn across the ground, mangled metal hung from the bus' ripped roof and black smoke billowed over the airport." The bomber's nationality is not yet known, but an article in the Telegraph said that as captured on CCTV, the bomber was a "young man with long hair, a 'Caucasian'..." The driver's license was sent to the FBI for authentication, and hopefully answers will come of it soon. Was the bomber an American?
There is obviously a connection in some way to the United States, whether the suicide bomber lived in the states or is connected in another way was not indicated. Special forces were able to obtain "DNA samples from the fingers of the bomber and are now checking databases in an attempt to identify him." Hopefully the perpetrators of the crime will be found and brought to justice, and the victims and families will find peace.
