Keeping up with the ever-changing world of technology is a difficult job. Successful tech companies have a lot of stressed out employees and must help them deal with that stress so they can become more productive employees and Facebook is no exception. However the company caused a bit of a stir because of the dismissal of a yoga instructor.
Alice Van Ness has been a yoga instructor for a variety of tech companies over the years and she has a no cell phone policy, most likely for the benefit of the people who take her classes. Who can relax when someone is blabbing on the phone all the time?
While teaching a class for Facebook employees, Van Ness says that she gave a "look" to an employee who brought out her cell phone. The employee filed a complaint against her with Plus One Health Management, the contractor who assigned the yoga instructor. As a result of the complaint, Van Ness was fired.
Plus One said, "We are in the business of providing great customer service. Unless a client requires us to specifically say no to something, we prefer to say yes whenever possible." What about the customers who are serious about the class? If Facebook has no problem with cell phones in yoga classes, why hire an outside person? Just hire a yes man who will let the employees do whatever they want?
It's unbelievable the employee got someone fired because she couldn't check her phone. If you need to be connected and your life is so important, maybe stay out of yoga class. Go buy a yoga DVD and stay home. Believe it or not, many are irritated when people talk on the phone in public. Sounds like the employee threw a tantrum for not getting her way. Shame on the contracting company for firing her over something so ridiculous.
