Â
I had fun putting this table setting (or as afficionados now call it, tablescape) together...
When I started looking around I was amazed at how many things I already had that fit the tri-color theme. Â I did buy the little flags ($1/3) and the small buckets ($1/each) at Target, but everything else was something I already owned.
Â
I did buy a 1 yard remant of 'patriotic theme' fabric ($1.49) at one of our fabric stores with the intention of cutting a section of it into napkins, but after I opened it up, it had such a nice border on both ends that I decided to just hem it all around and save it to use as a tablecloth for our 2x4 folding table...and use it next year ... and instead used my plain red napkins.
Â
There is a place by the side of the road above the village, on the way up to Akaka Falls, where huge bushes of this variety of sunflowers are growing. Â We took a container with water and some clippers and cut a few to use on the table... Sunflowers go with the 4th of July in my opinion...they look like a burst of fireworks!
Â
The flatware is some I've used mainly for breakfast. Â The cobalt plates are part of my cobalt glass collection. Â The red goblets are part of a set of 8 I gave my mother many, many years ago when she was going through her black and white with red accent phase - you can imagine how long ago when I tell you I got them with S&H Green Stamps! Â The Ball jar-mugs are some we've been collecting when we buy a certain brand of jams and jellies.
Â
In my earlier post today I mentioned we bought some pulled pork and some chicken from one of the vendors competing in the Hilo Bay BBQ Competition. Â I served them with my homemade baked beans (recipe will follow in a day or so) and a creamy slaw.
Â
From top left clockwise: pulled pork BBQ, Root Beer Baked Beans, Creamy Slaw and BBQ Chicken Southern Style.
For dessert we kept it light... raspberries and blueberries with ricotta sweetened with a touch of honey.

I overdid the eating bit today also...couldn't help it...both the BBQ pulled pork and chicken were delicious and my baked beans were the best I've ever made...

Ok, apparently the gym is going to be mine for a few days longer than I thought. Hahaha. I'm supposed to be underweight, according my docs, but I'm hanging out around average weight. Sheesh, no wonder I can't lose it. Nature thinks I'm not supposed to! The progressive dinner was great. I have to admit I love them, especially when those involved are equal or greater cooks than we are. Excellent eats!
Today at physical therapy the therapist put me on three different machines...I asked him if after the sessions were over I could sneak in and just use the place as a gym...he just laughed and didn't answer...
Potlucks are fun as they take a lot of the pressure off the hosts!

Last week, was really hot and sticky; this week, not so bad.
