I guess no one wants to really be associated with a weed smoking teen bride, an anorexic cutter, a DUI-er who likes to pick bar fights or a possible lesbian; especially when they all worked for the same childrens’ channel.
Gary Marsh, the current president of Disney Channel Worldwide, recently was interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter; denying any involvement in the later lives of the most infamous of Disney stars such as Miley, Demi, Shia and Raven:
“In my mind it’s: ‘You’ve landed a TV show, now what’s the consumer products opportunity? The film opportunities? The Disney channel movie? The crossover episode? The book you’re going to write?’ So they become Disney stars because they intersect with Disney in many ways, and that’s by design. Occasionally there are downsides to that: when we get overly identified with somebody and they go off the rails.”
More after the jump.
It’s a little unfortunate to think that perhaps Disney was the reason so many of these young kids’ went “off the rails” considering they are overworked and pushed to the highest of the celeb limelight, only to be cast aside when the new young star is on the rise. However, Marsh seems to believe that once the network is done with the actors/actresses, all ties are officially cut:
“We’re really clear on where our role begins and ends. We have things like a one-day seminar called Talent 101, where we bring in security experts, psychologists, showrunners and life coaches. It’s usually after the pilot but before the series launches. We give them all of the tools they might need, but the network is not responsible for raising their children.”
Responsible for raising them? No. Responsible for putting them into the limelight, showering them with praise and celebrity and then denying all blame when they go “hot mess” on an unsuspecting public? Sure.
