This is pretty cool. On August 5th, a small car-sized rover will arrive at Mars, and be lowered to the surface by a crane. The graphic explains it all:

Because of the distance, by the time scientists receive confirmation of entry into the Martian atmosphere, the vehicle will have already been landed, hopefully not crash-landed, for seven minutes. That will be a long, uncomfortable wait for them!

Though if you question the use of taxpayer dollars on this, I'm with you completely. I say, space exploration must be left to the market. Despite that, I have no problem recognizing how amazing this is...
