I am probably aging myself when I say that my best friend and I watched the original "Footloose" until we could recite every line by heart. The same is true for "Dirty Dancing" and a few others of that era.
Imagine my surprise, when at my tender age of "thirty-something," one of my favorite childhood movies was remade! I was appalled! I could not believe it! I even refused to watch it. There was no way the 2011 version could hold a candle to Kevin Bacon, for crying out LOUD!
Then, last December, I got on a plane from the familiar US soil to the UK. It was a VERY long flight! One of the movie choices, to my chagrin, was "Footloose (2011)." I wrestled with the decision for minutes! Finally I decided this was probably my only opportunity to watch it 1.) uninterrupted (I'm a wife, mother of a 3 year old, care taker of a 50 year old teenager), and 2.) it was "free" (if you can consider the umpteen dollars on the ticket "free."). So, I put on my headphones and prepared for the worst movie I have or ever will see.
The opening song started. Crap. It's not that bad! For a remake! "Ren" makes his appearance. Hmmmm, he's a lot cuter then I remembered from the previews! The whole movie really surprised me. They were able to maintain the small town feel, but modernize it a bit, without making it completely unrealistic. The actors selected for all the roles did a fantastic job!
I was so glad I went ahead and watched "Footloose (2011)." If you're a die hard Footloose (1981) fan like me, and are afraid to watch it, put on your red boots and crank it up!
