The garden was planted less than five weeks ago, and Sassy has already harvested some good eats! A few green onions and four purple radishes (which I forgot to list on my initial garden post). The radishes are more lavender than purple, and one of them is actually pink.
The onions went into egg salad on half of a whole wheat hamburger bun for lunch. I saved two of the radishes for supper, slicing them thin on a hamburger. Better than raw onion on burgers!
I was surprised at how tender the radishes were. They like cool weather and it has been hot and dry here, which should have made the radishes tough and woody. Perhaps it was because of all the garden watering I've been doing. Sad thirsty pepper plant....
In the last six weeks, there has been one decent rainfall. Last night's forecast was 100% chance of rain and thunderstorms. At midnight, the weather radar showed a cold front line of storms stretching from northern Minnesota to the Texas panhandle, and headed this way, within 40 miles. I went to bed with happy thoughts of a rain-soaked garden. But we got ... nothin'. *sigh* Next chance of rain: Saturday.
Amish Paste tomatoes are forming. A Sassy gardening tip: When I water individual plants like tomatoes, I use the point of a scissors to punch a few holes in the bottom corner of an empty milk jug. Use a hoe to dig a little trench around the plants. Fill the jug with water and place it so the water trickles into the 'moat', thus the water will slowly seep in where it will help the most, right to the plant's roots.
I am trying tomato cages this year. I found a few old rusty ones to use and purchased a few new ones. The pretty colored ones came from Menard's. It will be interesting to see if the tomato plants in cages produce better than the plants not caged. The kitties are resting in the shade today. Tomorrow, they have to hoe and pull weeds. ha! =^o^= |

Good luck with getting the kitties to help with weed pulling and such. (snicker)
I was talking to my boyfriend earlier that I plan on making potato and macaroni salad from scratch like my grandma use to make with my twist. I was telling him that I think homemade stuff like this is much better than any store bought. he agreed and can't wait til I make it. He said he wants to take it to work in his lunch.
Love your Pictures!
Great garden. My harvest is going to take a bit, I think!
I hope you are not taking care of your mom all by yourself. That is a big job and responsibility.
And you have a pepper already?? Wow!
