Sanford police chief Bill Lee was fired on Wednesday. As more information is released in the slaying of Trayvon Martin, the pressure became too much for Sanford, Florida's city leaders. The city commissioners refused to accept Lee's resignation back in April and instead opted for a formal dismissal this week.
Many feel the police chief should have done more in regards to the arrest of George Zimmerman. Lee said the reason Zimmerman was not arrested was because there was nothing to prove that his account of what happened was false. The national debate on the reasons behind the murder of Trayvon Martin has been heated since February. Unfortunately the incoming Sanford police chief will have his hands full until at least the conclusion of the second degree murder case against George Zimmerman.
In the end Bill Lee's inaction will haunt him forever. While he may have felt like he was following the letter of the law, his conscience had to know that Trayvon's life was lost and more should have been done. The death of a 17-year-old boy who had nothing but skittles and an iced tea should never, ever be written off as simple self-defense. In the death of a minor the investigation should always be extensive.

The Chief of Police knew that he was guilty of an inexcusable lack of sound and professional judgement in his leadership capacity, when he refused to investigate the incident further to determine whether or not charges should be brought against Mr. Zimmerman in the death of Trayvon Martin. That is why he offered his resignation following the assigned government prosecutor assuming authority over the case and thereby ordering Mr. Zimmerman's actions be investigated.
Unfortunately for both the Chief, the police department and the city he represented, his resignation was at that time turndowned by City Council who requested that he remain as the Chief of Police, a request which he accepted.
Now, with prosecution's indepth investigation resulting in the arrest and indictment of Mr. Zimmerman, (as well as his wife on a related charge) the Chief can no longer retain the respect of office that such a commanding position requires. Hence, his submitting of a second resignation and it's acceptance by the City Council was appropriate.
How much time had lapsed between the event, and the first public outcry?
