With all the excitement about my son going to Fermilab to work I have forgotten to post about what happened to him and his friend on the way back from Tennessee on June 11th. They were coming home from Bonnaroo, a 4 day music concert. Just south of Indianapolis, my son's friends car blew a tire while they were traveling at 75 miles per hour. His friend Jenna was driving at the time, and the car quickly started to spin out of control, she was able to get the car under control somewhat so that they were not spinning widely but not completely under control and they ended up hitting a concrete embankment on the side of the road. She thankfully didn't hit any other cars. The air bags deployed and the kids were not hurt except for some burns caused by the seat belts. My son called just after the accident and said briefly that they had been in an accident, were both ok, but the car was totaled. Within 15 minutes of the call I was on the road to Indianapolis, 140 miles away. I brought my older son with me so he could keep in touch with my son and his friend. The car was towed and the police gave the kids a ride to McDonalds so they could wait for me to arrive and I could find them. Finally after a 2 hour ride I got to that McDonalds where the kids were. I was calm and controlled all the way to Indianapolis, but as we were pulling into the parking lot and I saw the both of them walking towards me, I just totally lost it. Guess it was the relief of seeing them both with my own eyes, and knowing they were ok. My son said he could see me crying as I pulled in. I jumped out and grabbed my son sobbing to see him alive and well, then it was Jenna's turn for a hug and a sob. Then both together, my relief was just overwhelming. I want to say the people at McDonalds were wonderful. My son told them that they had just had an accident and had a 2 hour wait until I could get there, and they gave Danny and Jenna some food, free of charge and let them sit there for 2 hours. Sadly the car was totaled, but our kids are fine and alive, and really that's all that matters to me and my husband as well as Jenna's parents. When we finally arrived home and dropped off Jenna, her mom came out and thanked me over and over again for getting the kids. Her and her husband were at work at the time, and have to turn off their phones while there, so they knew nothing about the accident for some hours after it occurred. I am just so glad I was able to get them, and that they are just fine. It was a scary moment for this loving mom. My kids are absolutely my whole world.
