My artistic intent is always to create intriguing metaphorical and symbolically nuanced pieces for viewers who enjoy spending time studying and interpreting an image. Generally, I have a mind and heart for bright and vivid colors, so I don't usually create pieces that are predominantly dark or black, but here is one of those exceptions.
Lately, I have been wrestling with dark memories and feelings of resentments from my past. This piece sprang from my efforts to purge those feelings and eliminate their drag on the more optimistic bend which I prefer to cultivate and project.
Shared for your hopeful enjoyment; a small copy of the entire work (1.8 inches by 2.8 inches - landscape format @ 200 dpi) with three "actual-size" out takes.
"Haunting Memories" - original size 11 x 17 inches (landscape format) @ 200 dpi
Actual Size - This winged character is one of my favorites in this piece. I especially enjoyed the owl like appearance I was able to achieve with the face.

Actual Size - close up of the entrance to the castle/monastery/citadel with business suited demon head guard

Actual Size - robed figure herding one of the skeletons toward the castle/monastery/citadel

I had to take some breaks during the creation of this piece ("Haunting Memories"). Although the constant exposure to the darkness of the above piece temporarily increased the sensitivity of my retina to colors, which was fun, the grayness also seemed to seep into my consciousness and sour it, so I took some creative breaks to create some brightly colored items that could freshen my mind back up. Below is one of the pieces that came form those breaks. I fully plan on working this one much further.

I much prefer the work-in progress. If someone's gonna crack the whip at you, best if it is you :-D
Thank you for the comment, recommend and song lyrics below.

Glad to know the work was cathartic. I write prose or compose poetry to do the very same thing. I each case, the work is just about all that is left of the emotions.
In clown-ragged capers in sawdust rings
While common people like you and me
We'll be builders for eternity
Each is given a bag of tools
A shapeless mass and the book of rules
Each must make his life as flowing in
Tumbling block on a stepping stone
While common people like you and me
We'll be builders for eternity
Each is given a bag of tools
A shapeless mass and the book of rules
Look when the rain has fallen from the sky
You know the sun will be only with us for a while
While common people like you and me
We'll be builders for eternity
Each is given a bag of tools
A shapeless mass and the book of rules
Book of Rules by The Heptones
I'm glad (kind of honored in a way) that my work brought such a tune to mind.
I don't usually use my art in this way; and I've been arriving at the conclusion that it is absolutely a way I need to start using my art. Something about honesty, unvarnished truth and personal experience being expressed through art has been seeping into my consciousness. Here's to hoping it's a good idea.

Have you read Elizabeth Bishop's poem, "The Man-Moth"? If not, you should be able to find it on the internet.
- Best To You, Alison
I had a stretch like that when things from way back were rearing up and biting me in the ass. Freaky. "Why now?" I asked. I guess it was an outstanding issue that needed closure. Go do it!
Thank you submitting to Gathers Luminous Writers and Artists.
- Best To You, Stephen !!
Possible title for second piece: Driving myself crazy
Hopper painted many fine works. One of my favorites is "Morning Sun" which is currently owned by the Columbus Ohio Museum of Art. Many artists paint(ed) their demons out, or sink themselves into the creative process to escape from their demons. I've done both and I'm very grateful that other artists blazed the trail and pointed the way.
