Depression is a state of low mood and may make people feel sad, anxious, empty, worried, helpless, guilty, and restless. It is a condition which affects a person’s thoughts, behavior, feelings and physical well being. People may lose interest in activities which used to give them pleasure and may also lead to various problems like insomnia, loss of energy, problems in concentrating and suicide. It is not a psychiatric disorder but is a normal reaction to certain events or may be a side effect of certain medication.
Depression symptoms include; feelings of sadness or unhappiness, irritability or frustration, loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities, insomnia or excessive sleeping, changes in appetite, slowed thinking, speaking or body movements indecisiveness, distractibility and decreased concentration trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions and remembering things, frequent thoughts of death, dying or suicide, and unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches. Depression also features a number of psychiatric syndromes as a main symptom. The mood disorders are group of disorders considered to be the primary disturbance of mood and include; MDD which is major depressive disorder, commonly known as clinical depression, and dysthymia which is state of chronic depressed mood. Another mood disorder, bipolar disorder features abnormally elevated energy levels, cognition and mood.
Depression is a serious illness that can take a terrible toll on individuals and families. Untreated depression can result in emotional, behavioral and health problems that can affect every part of people’s life. Complications associated with depression can include: alcohol abuse, anxiety, family conflicts, work or school problems, relationship difficulties, social isolation, suicide, and self mutilation.
The rates of depression in women are twice as high as in men. This is because of the hormonal changes. The usual symptoms they experience are pronounced feelings of guilt, sleep excessively, overeat, and gain weight. Women are also more likely to suffer from seasonal affective disorder. A depressed teenager is rather hostile, grumpy, or easily loses his or her temper. They may also experience aches and pains which need to be treated. Depression in older adults is associated with poor health, a high mortality rate, and an increased risk of suicide. They also complain about the physical rather than the emotional signs and symptoms of depression.
Psychological counseling is another key depression treatment. Psychotherapy is a way of treating depression by talking about people’s condition and related issues with a mental health provider. Depression can also be treated by herbal remedies. They include; St. John's wort, SAMe, Omega-3 fatty acids and Folate.
