While many people have made the courageous decision to check out physical therapy schools in their area, most have no idea what to do in terms of research, don’t know what to look for, and aren’t sure what they can do to make sure that they get in to where they apply. Since this is such a big choice career-wise for most people, most have no desire to fail and make a bad decision. Start Volunteering

For those that may think that they want to work in the physical therapy field, are you certain that you want to even if you don’t have any actual experience? Because of this, it may be smart of you to head to a local physical therapy facility and start to volunteer there. Keep in mind that because of the all branches out there that are available to you, you should check out a variety of different places to volunteer at to make sure that you pick a branch you enjoy working in. Volunteering also comes with the added benefit of becoming acquaintances with a physical therapist. Since most programs require a letter of recommendation, this can be a huge advantage to you. Besides this, most programs require so many houses of volunteering time somewhere. By already volunteering before joining the program, you’ll have a ton of experience.

Determine the Desired Degree

A person out there today is able to obtain four different degrees that all differ significantly. Known as the Transitional Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy, this degree is for someone who has already gotten a physical therapy undergraduate degree. As far as subjects taught go, this would include things like pediatrics, geriatrics, and neurology. The program normally takes around two years to finish. Next up, the degree known as a Direct Entry Master’s in Physical Therapy, is for graduates who possess a degree in an entirely separate field. Because of this, the curriculum is different and takes two years to finish. Within the first year, traditional aspects of physical therapy will be taught. Known as the Transitional Doctorate in Physiotherapy, this degree is for those who already have a physical therapy Master’s Degree but want a PhD. The fourth degree, known as a Direct Entry Doctorate, is for those with a Master’s Degree in an unrelated field but desire to have a PhD in physical therapy.

Picking a School

After you have considered which program you wish to study in and what degree you want, you now need to choose a school. The first thing to look at is the location. Would you rather live right near your home or somewhat far away from everything? After, check out the competition. Since you will be competing against a ton of people when applying, apply for a few different places. More than anything, look at your new school’s accreditation. It should be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).
