Our family expanded about 2 hours ago. We wound up going to two pet shops. The first didn't have anything that Gideon wanted (well, we liked the Chweenies and he liked the $50 corn snake, but those were both out, lol)
So, off to another store we went. There we found kitties for $5 (dang allergies!), hamsters, mice, hermit crabs, bunnies, guinea pigs and more. Gideon liked the hermit crabs at first, then moved on. What he wound up REALLLLLY wanting was the Ribbon Snake. After some questions of size and life expectency we looked around to add up the prospective cost to get him the pet he really wanted.
He has always wanted a snake, and I always said no way. They are creepy, and I cannot feed mice to them. Heck, we have a pet mouse. It's like feeding her to the snake every time. Could not do that no way no how. Well, this snake is pretty small -- about 4 feet in adult length and if you wanted to it could eat mice (but you'd run the risk of the mouse biting the snake fatally.) What it really eats are feeder fish, crickets, frogs, mealworms and that sort of thing. After some long thoughts and making deals, we brought the snake home. Gideon loves him already and has named it "Rexy."
Rexy is a Ribbon Snake, which is in the Garter Snake family, so they are small, fast, and harmless. Couldn't really bite if it wanted to. So, I'll make an exception to the no snake rule for this fella.
Guess he's settling in quite well to his new home, too. Gideon proudly reports that the snake has eaten three crickets already.
