Barbara Johnson wrote a winner in the 85 page book “HUMOR ME, I'm Over The Hillâ€. The reader will find the stories in this book uplifting, humorous while bringing an element of hope to the depressed soul. This book is filled with real stories from people who share the humor in everyday life situations. “We cannot control our circumstances. We can control how we react to themâ€. (author unknown) seems to be the theme to each of the stories. Each of these stories are short, some only a few paragraphs long while others are a few pages long. It is quick to read a short story before going to sleep giving the reader an uplifting thought before dozing off.
Â
I had never read any books by this author before. Before I go any farther with this review, you need to know that I don't think things are funny when others laugh so hard. I don't seem to have much of as sense of humor, so I am told. My reasoning is that most jokes make fun of others and I do not enjoy that. I hate seeing others laugh at someone else expense.
Â
Now back to my my review. My first thoughts were “I don't want to think that I am over the hill, even if I amâ€. As I leafed through the book, one story in particular jumped out at me. I laughed so hard. Because of copyright laws, I cannot type out the story word for word but I would like to share it in my own words as I remember it.
Â
A man had been in a coma for a long time. His wife stayed by his side through it all, awaiting him to come back to her. He came out of the coma and looked at her lovingly. He proceeded to say “You have been with me through the loss of my jobâ€. “You stayed by my side when we got hit by the large truckâ€. “You have always been by my side through all the bad things that happenâ€. The wife smiled with pride and love for him. Then he said “I think you are bad luckâ€.
Â
Now this book had my total and complete interest. I read every story in this book and they were funny. Not because they made fun of people but because it makes light of everyday experiences that have the potential to being a person down. The people telling these stories are choosing to take the experiences and not only avoiding depression but are becoming uplifted by them.
Â
I cannot say enough good things about the way this author wrote this book. It was amazing. It is perfect gift for anyone who needs to smile when life gets them down. I recommend it anyone who is going through trials in their lives. I also recommend it to be read or the stories retold to a depressed person. I believe it is that uplifting and a truly humorous book. Upon researching the author, I gained respect for her as she wrote while dealing with cancer. Cancer ultimately ended up taking her life. I loved this book and it was just what I needed! This book gets a 5 star from me!

FROM THE BACK OF THE BOOK:

Laugh your way through the maturity maze with the Geranium Lady!
Â
A 2001 cancer diagnosis sent best selling author and beloved Women of Faith speaker Barbara Johnson “crying to God about the way He was bringing my life to a closeâ€.
But then, she quips, “Unexpectedly . . . I kept on living!†In this, Barbara's fourth “last book†of zany joy and senior silliness, she celebrates still living, still laughing, and still growing older by poking fun at time-sensitive topics ranging from aging (I'm ready to meet my Maker . . . but He's apparently tied up with a previous engagement to forgetfulness (Of course I'll smile for the camera . . . just as soon as I find my teeth).
Â
Humor Me, “I'm Over the Hill is the Geranium Lady's irresistibly funny appeal to her fellow adventures in aging to “live happily to one hundred or die trying!â€
“I've reached the age where I need three pairs of glasses: one for driving, one for reading – and one to find the other two!â€

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Â
Â
Barbara Johnson (1927-2007) died July 2nd, 2007 of cancer (Central Nervous System Lymphoma) after a valiant 6 year fight against the disease. During her illness, she added four more books to her long list of published works, including one that takes humorous pokes at her life with cancer. Affectionately called the “Geranium Lady,†a title taken from her bestselling book, Stick a Geranium in Your Hat and Be Happy, her homespun humor and hope in God in the midst of tragedy, ministered to millions.
A strong Christian woman who relied on her faith in God and her sense of humor to persevere through many devastating experiences, her life was plagued by a string of tragedies. Her husband was in a near fatal accident and slowly recovered from debilitating injuries. She lost one son in Vietnam and another son to a drunk driver. Her third son was estranged from the family while pursuing a homosexual lifestyle. But, she emerged from these experiences having learned that though pain is inevitable, people can choose to pick flowers instead of weeds.
Her compassion extended far beyond the pages of her encouraging books. Wanting to use her own pain to help others, she and her husband Bill founded Spatula Ministries, a unique organization that uses a “spatula of love†to help parents “peel themselves off the ceiling†and begin on the road to recovery. She wrote her first book after reaching the age of 50 and was voted “Celebrity Mom of the Year†for 1996. Prior to being diagnosed with cancer, she toured across the country as a popular conference speaker and part of the "Women of Faith" tour. Her many books have comforted millions of women, bringing them hope and humor in times of distress. She will be missed by many, but her life will live on in her numerous books.

Yet the box was addressed to me and had my correct mailing address. When I opened the box, I looked at the invoice and recognized the name of the person who purchased it. She does not want anyone to know she sent it to me so I will respect her wished.
Thank you dear gather friend. It was just what I needed and came at a time when I was very depressed and dealing with trials myself. Thank you!
It really is a good book. The stories are just the right length to read before turning out the light at bedtime. They end the day on a good note.
I haven't read anything humorous in a LONG while!
These stories were not making fun of someone else. They are making light of the circumstances we all face at one time or another. I think you would like this book.
I still could not figure it out. I finally opened it and looked at the receipt. It had a gather members name on it that I recognized. I did not even know she had my mailing address.
She is a very sweet lady and evidently she does stuff like this all the time. I must admit, it was a nice surprise and I have enjoyed all three books in the package.
What a great Gather friend you have.
