Michelle Obama has praised the recent move by Disney to heavily restrict the use of junk food advertisements on children's programming. The first lady stated, "Our kids are constantly bombarded with sophisticated messages designed to sell them foods that simply aren't good for them," Obama said. "And let me tell you, we know it works, right?"
According to the Sentinel Source, "Food and beverage advertisers who seek to promote their products on Disney Channel or Disney XD will be required by 2015 to meet guidelines regarding serving size, calories, fat and sugar content." Is this a good move? Are children more likely to be overweight if they see a junk food advertisement? It is most likely less about the advertisements and more about the parents, as they are the ones who buy the food for the family.
Perhaps if children were limited to television and computer time, they would be more likely to be active. According to Kidshealth.org, "Many kids are spending less time exercising and more time in front of the TV, computer, or video-game console. And today's busy families have fewer free moments to prepare nutritious, home-cooked meals. From fast food to electronics, quick and easy is the reality for many people." It seems as though parent's example is the ultimate indicator for success.
Ironically, Sasha Obama recently celebrated her birthday with friends at the Red Robin in Dulles, Virginia. As reported by cinemablend, "The girls chowed down on chicken sandwiches, burgers with avocado and milkshakes, while mom set aside her preference for healthy eating for a few hours." Does Red Robin display nutritional information on their menus? Last year, Sasha celebrated her birthday at Georgetown Cupcake.
Last month, Michelle Obama's first book was published, American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens across America. Apparently, one won't see the Obama children digging and planting any time soon, as they are not interested in gardening. Hopefully, parents can be motivated to be strong role-models (as the Obama family has shown to be with their kids) by allowing less screen time and more active playtime.

The First Lady might have a go at a full-length Mirror...and then find something better to do with her time.
But, when our beloved Country teeters on the brink of Marxism and ruination, this sort of rubbish really gets my quills up. ;)
I was kind of struggling with it. The truth is, it was time for someone to step in and help parents with the stimulating advertising that hits the kids non stop.
Also, if McDonalds had taken it upon themselves to change their menu after talking to doctors and parents, just wanted to do the right thing, I would appreciate the schools & business doing the right thing. There is a pandemic of fat :)
We did appreciate Laura Bush encouraging kids to read. I think, if there were not so much mini controlling of the population by Obama's controlling drive we would appreciate Michelle's taking on the food industry by wooing them into working with the parents.
But because they are in overdrive on controlling the masses we cannot let ourselves appreciate any changes she's bringing about. I resent her pressure.
Too bad, it couldn't have been a life helping gesture.
By God you have a lot to learn about personal RESPONSIBILITY. If you, or Mum and Dad, don't have the nuts to control your Children, you've no business having them.
If you are so gullible as to believe that because there are unfit Parents Grubberment has the right to dictate and do THEIR JOB for them, I can assure you that your Children WOULD be "running the show."
And while I'm not a fan of M or B Obama or government control, nobody is trying to "dictate."
"And while I'm not a fan of M or B Obama or government control, nobody is trying to "dictate." What??????
Robert...
a) I'm not a fan of the Obamas
b) You used the word "dictate." I don't see where anyone, particularly M. Obama is in a dictatorial position.
The banned Dispenser Machines?
You haven't heard of the "food police" in the Public Schools who take away a Child's lunch, replace it, and charge the Parent?
You haven't heard of the Ingredients ban on certain Dishes in certain Restaurants?
You haven't heard of the ban on Fries in "Happy Meals?"
Need I go on???
Robert...
If I had a Child in Public School, and something even remotely like this happened...woe unto that School Administration...
This is no different than the practice of the Fascist in pre- and Nazi Germany...
You're too Smart to be!
Can't abide cooked vegetables even now. Except corn, of course. And steamed asparagus is pretty great.
Ah, food.
Just one more inanity to take the "People" magazine subscribers' eye off the ball.
JUST ANOTHER CASE OF DO LIKE I SAY NOT LIKE I DO!!!......i find this both annoying and boring
Leftists are a complete joke, Renee...a complete joke.
Mr Pinocchio Gore can do one Renee, I will use the dishwasher every time I have my delicate hands to think of I'm not getting chapped and cracked hands for anyone and I refuse to wear those pink fairy like rubber gloves as well I'm no pervert :-)
"Mmm, check out these oats as opposed to the oats on the other channel. Mmm, mmm damn they're good. My calorie count is so low this month I'm gonna bake some moonshine cookies!".
To me this is nuts.
As said on Chris post we have to get back to basics, there is nothing wrong with having soda or 1/2 burgers with a few bags of fries as long as you don't overdo it all the time. Moreover, the basics have to start at home when you are young.
We have to start our children eating properly and to teach them that just because it’s there in front of you, you don't have to buy the damned stuff. I remember my first cruise I took some years ago, a relative who had been on one before me said you will enjoy the cruise but be careful on ours we put on nearly a stone in weight with all the food that was put in front of us. I said WTF just because it’s put in front of you 24 hours a day it does not mean you have to shovel down your gullet as if there was no tomorrow, have a bit of will power FFS.
See what I am getting at? I don't know if it’s me and I am wrong but to me it’s not wrong to have a glass of soda or a ½ pounder with fries but you don't have to eat and drink it every day of the week. To me when my wife and I have something like that it’s a treat and we enjoy it more.
One warm night halfway through the holiday we in town enjoying the evening when my mate nudged me and said cor look at that fit bird, I turned my head and saw this gorgeous long haired blond with a waist to die for with tight fitting jeans .
She had a friend so we decided as they were just going in one of the many pubs we would follow and try to chat them up at the bar. My mate who was never one to be shy walked up to the long haired blond put his arms around her waist and said what are you drinking gorgeous, whereas this gruff voice said er whats your game pal. We had failed to see that it was a a young man around the age of twenty five who had long blond hair. We beat a hasty retreat before the man beat us. the next time I went their I was happily married with two children although I did keep looking over my shoulder for a long legged blond with tight fitting jeans and a waist to die for. Ah fond memories of Torquay
Now THAT is funny!
The idea that people who support any particular political point of view have the corner on virtue is just plain silly.
It is the IDEAL, and not perfection, that we, as Humans, should strive for.
That a homosexual holds that it is Morally wrong for homosexuals to Marry, or a Married philanderer holds Faithfulness dear, does not preclude that person from being correct.
"The idea that people who support any particular political point of view have the corner on virtue is just plain silly."
Au Contraire...
The differences in the VALUES between the Leftist and the Conservative are striking...and Telling.
The point, and thus the importance, lay in the Value...not in the failing.
Sure, it's great to try to get your kids to eat a healthy diet. It's also sensible to let them have what they want on special occasions like birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. If you do that they get the idea that foods like that are reserved for special occasions.
The mom said “I pack her lunchbox according to what she eats. It always consists of a fruit. It never consists of a vegetable. She eats vegetables at home because I have to watch her because she doesn’t really care for vegetables.” The difference is...the mother knows the child... are we regulating to a silly extreme?
