Even in death, Rudy Eugene, aka the 'Miami Zombie', 'Miami Cannibal' or 'Causeway Cannibal', has once again shocked the nation. Eugene, 31, was shot dead while in the process of chewing off the face of a homeless man, yet no human remains were found enclosed in his stomach!
Police were called to the MacArthur Causeway on May 26th to find Eugene naked and ripping the skin off of 65-year-old Ronald Poppo's face with his teeth. A police officer shot Eugene, but he continued his attack until the officer shot him to death. Pieces of Poppos face were found on the sidewalk and in Eugene's teeth, so police believe he spit out everything he bit off. The crime scene workers who had to identify those parts will probably have a tough time getting over the incident. Most of Poppo's face is gone and he has already undergone some skin grafts to help him heal. He is still in the hospital and unable to recall the attack for police.
Right after the attack, police speculated that it was due to Eugene using the legal drug, 'bath salts', even though there is no evidence of its use. Several undigested pills were found in his body along with marijuana. Online, a lot of speculation is going on about 'bath salts' and if a violent reaction is common. In his discarded pants, police discovered the Miami Zombie's gold teeth. He wore them to replace his two front teeth lost in a childhood accident. His family claims he was 'deeply religious' and that he read the Bible everyday. However religious he was, the man had been arrested several times, including once having to be tasered by officers during a 'domestic dispute'. Maybe it is some kind of survivor's guilt that makes people go on and on about what a wonderful/religious/helpful/gentle person their loved one was before they committed a heinous crime. Back at the causeway, police found torn up pieces of a Bible and in his car parked nearby, a Quran.
