I'll Have Another, the racehorse, had his chance at making history. Now he's just a scratch. Very few horses have ever won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes—racing's Triple Crown—and no thoroughbred has done so for the past 34 years. Since coming from behind at Churchill Downs, the horse has become a celebrity. The heartbreaking scratch of the Belmont may be career-ending, says Hollywood.com, and it puts him in company with other celebs who have had to drop out of the race, just when their careers were taking off.
Take Shannon Doherty leaving Beverly Hills 90210. It's been years, but
fans still remember. Her career never was the same. Take Frank Darabont, fired from the Walking Dead. Take Lindsay Lohan. Take Charlie Sheen. Please. Watching I'll Have Another fold is just as career-endingly sad.
Then there are the divorces. Will either Heidi Klum or Seal ever get back the following they had as a couple? Will Kim Kardashian ever live down her marriage fiasco, or Kris Humphries be taken seriously again as a sport star? Celebrity meltdown fascinates fans for a while. Then the fans move on.
Chris Daughtry, who exited American Idol much sooner than expected, is only one of many rising celebs who got cut off at the knees, but people are still talking. And viewers allergic to large, heavy books are still stunned that Ned Stark, who looked like the heart and soul of the HBO Game of Thrones series, lost his head in a very nasty way. George R.R. Martin might be able to explain why. Why I'll Have Another scratched is also a mystery, but that will be solved. Then he'll join the sad list of former celebs who almost made it really big.
