85 mph in Texas?

85 mph in Texas? Sure it's true. In Oklahoma and Texas, many roads are already 75 mph, so many people are already doing 85 mph. The problem is if this flies, many of us will do 95 mph. Why not just fly?

If Texas passes the new speed limit, it would be the fastest road in the United States. Everything is bigger and better in Texas, right?

According to CBS, "Transportation officials in Texas are testing a new 41-mile segment of highway to see whether it would be safe to post the state's first 85 mph speed limit, setting it on a path to have the highest posted speed limit in the U.S."

I do not think this will do much to change the pace at which folks in Texas travel. I remember one lady who complained to the police that people in Oklahoma were speeding when the speed limit was 65 mph. The cops told her to get out of the way, she was the bottleneck!

I saw this article yesterday and sent it to my brother, who lives outside of San Antonio. I haven't heard back from him about whether he is in agreement or not. I understand that it's hard to stay at 70-75mph when it's such a straight, flat highway. But, any accidents that happen will be very dangerous at 85mph!

Some places it's perfectly safe and proper to have very high speed limits. I'm sure there are many places especially in the west where 100mph would be safe.

People already go that speed here....nothing new. It just means less tickets will be written for that speed.

It would be safer at that speed if the road is kept in very good condition and the cars that travel on it have to pass inspection like they do on the autobahn in Europe.

I thought it was always that fast in texas because of the long ways between some towns and because it is so flat

I remember moving from CO to NY and some of the roads have 70 and 75 for speed limits...I had a tiny little Aspire that we had loaded down for the move and couldn't go over 60 with my pedal to the medal...it was interesting

I have no problem with it. Every time I've driven across Texas, it took forever -- there's just nothing there.

Oh you are talking to the wrong person. I got a speeding ticket for doing more than 110 that was as far as my speed needle went. The cop didn't catch me till I slowed down.

The highest speed limit here in Ohio, where I live is 65
Ah ha. I remember when we all changed one day from going 75 to 55. They say it saved lives but so would walking. I'm happy with 75 (which means you can go 80)

I remember when I lived in Carrolton TX, while driving in Dallas, you had to go with the flow of traffic, otherwize you get reared,, if they want to drive 85 let them yet let them not complain of the gas prices either,
you dont have to do what every one else does,, yet you may get reamed in the "end"

I live in Texas and I drive fast. It just happens becuse you do go with the flow and the flow is 80 to 85 normally. When on the interstate highways I try to keep within the speed limits (75 mostly) becase there are more highway patrols along the interstates just waiting for a chance to give me a ticket. I'm actually a good driver and I do slow down when the occasion calls for it but on the Dallas/Fort Worth busy highways if you don't want to get run over just go with it. The last ticket I got was in Tennessee about 15 years ago and I was going 92 mph (my bad). I was the only one on the interstate except the cop and he objected to me going so fast (LOL). It cost me about $200 which I deserved. Don't break the speed limit they are there for a reason. If they change the speed limit to 85 mph I'll do my best to keep up.
