In an interview out today in the New York Times, Andy Samberg has confirmed rumors that he will not be returning to Saturday Night Live after this season.
"It's an incredibly emotional and strange moment in my life," he told the Times on Friday. "Obviously it's not a huge shock, but I did officially decide not to come back."
With rumors that the comedian would be leaving the show swirling in light of Kristen Wiig's own announcement that she, too, would be departing, Samberg felt compelled to make a decision and let fans of his work—including the great musical shorts "Mother Lover" and "D--- in a Box"—know that this season would be his last.
Though he's hardly the most senior of castmembers—he's been with the show for the past seven seasons—Andy Samberg has certainly made his mark on SNL history, winning an Emmy in 2007, and nominated again in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
How do you feel about Andy Samberg's departure from Saturday Night Live? Are you surprised? Do you feel that producers should restructure and bring in new castmembers, or is it time for SNL to hang up their hats?
