Only one player besides Derrick Rose has hogged the thoughts of Chicago Bulls fans since their playoff run ended weeks ago. Will the front office stand with the current roster or can they make a real run at Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic?
Derrick Rose and NBA draft overshadow future of Carlos Boozer with Bulls
All is strangely quiet on the basketball front for Chicago. The shock at the tragic injury to star point guard Derrick Rose has faded somewhat and now fans look forward to what the front office can do to improve the roster until he returns. While doctors think it will take a full season before he's at full strength again, some people think the Bulls should aim higher than just keeping the roster in tact. That's why some have their eyes on the upcoming NBA draft. Chicago only has one pick and it's in the bottom half of the first round. Experts think the team will focus on finding another shooter such as Purdue guard John Jenkins or Orlando Johnson out of UC-Santa Barbara. Both players are highly rated offensive threats and would give the Bulls some badly needed help until Rose is healthy. However, there are some whispers that the Bulls could become aggressive on draft day and trade up to find more talent. Many fans would love nothing better than for Carlos Boozer to become part of any deal as he's not lived up to his big contract. Then again, the Chicago Bulls may have other reasons to move him other than just getting a higher draft pick.
Howard future may affect others like Deron Williams and Brooklyn Nets
One player that can't seem to stay out of news headlines is Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic. The star center could enter NBA free agency in the fall, putting his team in a terrible bind between trying to trade him and letting him walk. While many don't question his ability, some have started to question if Howard is or will ever become smart enough to see his future. From the very start he made it clear he wants to play on a team where he can win and is the "man" making it happen. If that's all he wanted than he'd stay in Orlando. Instead he has constantly toyed with the idea of hitting free agency to find a new home, leaving Magic fans and teams around the league in limbo as to what he'll do. One such team is the Brooklyn Nets who have their own free agent problems with star point guard Deron Williams. While some think it's a 50/50 chance Williams will stay, others think the only thing standing between D-Will and a new home is whether Brooklyn can pry Howard away from Orlando. It's easy enough on paper, but Howard hasn't made anything clear about what he wants. Most experts think his brightest future lay further north in Chicago. Together with Rose the Bulls would become an instant contender, and the beauty is Howard would have ample time to become his own superstar in the eyes of Bulls fans until Rose returns.
Much has to happen for the Chicago Bulls to land Dwight Howard. It starts with finding an exit ramp for Carlos Boozer but could involve much more. The Brooklyn Nets know this too as they try to hang on to Deron Williams. Either he or Derrick Rose could have a bright future next to the Orlando Magic center, unless of course he does what he always does in the unexpected.
