John Edwards, Not Guilty On 1 Count~Hung On The...

I haven't been really following the trial, but I was definitely interested in its outcome. Mainly because how this man, John Edwards, was a heartbeat away from the Presidency (I really think he would've been elected at some point), and had his entire political career wiped out...all for the lust of a woman, no less. If I was on this jury, I'd have delivered the same "Not Guilty" verdict. Why??? Partly out of sympathy for Edwards, and despite this whole sordid tale, and the utmost respect I hold for his deceased wife, I still feel sorry for the guy. Do you???

I don't know....only I don't think it was right at all, when his wife of many years, was dying of cancer, he was having an affair with another woman. That has always bothered me a great, great deal, so I really don't have any sympathy for the legal battles he's been dealing with. I was highly surprised at the verdicts today, though.

Nora, I couldn't agree more with you, but that's not what this trial was about~it was whether he illegally used campaign funds. If it had been about what he did to Elizabeth, no doubt he would've been found guilty!

While his actions were those of a cad, this did seem like a malicious prosecution. Looking at what happens in campaigns, I think we probably need to throw out campaign finance laws, write some with teeth, and call a cease-and-desist point. After that point, let them prosecute everything. And ... IMHO ... make sure only people are citizens!

I thought his taking full responsibility for his actions so publicly took a lot of courage. Way too many of our public figures are incapable of owning up to their own mistakes. He may have made an excellent president but he was a total louse as a husband.

I was hoping he would have been found GUILTY GUILTY GUILTY only because it would have then greatly expanded the definition of what is campaign finance stuff and include a lot more into the law than ever before. The GOP would have to now follow the new stricter rules this would have started, too.

But because this was about existing laws as they've been followed so far, I guess it doesn't apply to him, then. I wonder why they tried to expand that now, for him.

I do not feel sorry for him. He used campaign funds to pay for his affair. If he had become President he would probably kept the secret service men who bought prostitutes in Brazil and used tax payers money to give raises so they could pay the $800 hookers next time. This man is unethical and I wouldn't want somone who cheats on his cancer stricken wife as my President.
