Zach Wahls is an Eagle Scout who happens to feel that the Boy Scouts' anti-gay policy is wrong. He is fighting it by circulating a petition--actually three boxes of petitions--signed by over 275,000 people. All of these people agree with Zach that it's time for a change.
According to a report from ABC News, Zach Wahls presented the three boxes of signed petitions to higher-ups at the Boy Scouts' National Annual Meeting in Orlando on behalf of a den mother who was ousted because she is a lesbian. Jennifer Tyrrell was removed as den leader of an Ohio troop in April.
This isn't the first time Zach Wahls has taken on anti-gay subjects. He is the author of My Two Moms and he also spoke before Iowa legislators against an amendment that would ban both gay marriage and civil unions in that state.
Now the Eagle Scout is taking on the Boy Scouts in an unprecedented action. His petition has gained national attention, too, garnering support and signatures from Ellen DeGeneres, Ricky Martin, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Julianne Moore and star of The Hunger Games, Josh Hutcherson.
Following the presentation of the petition, Wahl met with three representatives of the Boy Scouts privately. He will only say that the conversation was an 'honest one' and that they've taken a 'positive first step.'
Kudos to this Eagle Scout who has the guts to take on a cause in an organization he spent years working with very closely. Clearly this young man has character and a huge heart. No one should be denied the right to participate in organizations like the Boy Scouts--especially for reasons of sexuality.
