Memorial Day Remembered

I remember parades

Honoring our Veterans

I remember flowers on graves

For those who would not come home again

We took our children to those parades

And ceremonies in the Park

A picnic in the back yard

That ended after dark

Now parades are scarce

More sales are at the mall

Cookouts are the rage

For families large and small

For those of us who lost loved ones

We still love and honor them

The gold star flags in windows

Remember way back then

I pray for those that weep

For the hurting never ceases

Pause and remember our heroes

Pray the need for war decreases

Send our boys back home,

The veterans in the making

Let them live in a peaceful world

And keep more hearts from breaking

God Bless All Who Served and are Serving

God Bless America

Actually this year I witnessed over 400,000 people attending the Dawn Service in Perth on Anzac Day (their Memorial Day) on April 25th. Although people may have barbecues or go to the beach or mall, I think here in America we still set aside sometime over the three day week-end to pay respect for our dead.

Very, very beautiful, Elsie! It's wonderful seeing you post!!!!! It seems like so many have forgotten the "true" meaning of Memorial Day, which is so very sad......we've spent the past three days decorating close to 30 graves in 5 or 6 different cemeteries......a tradition I've known/kept since I was a little girl.........I love cemeteries, I love walking around them, looking at the beautiful old, old headstones......learning a bit about various individuals.......we even went back to my hometown to decorate my mom & dads' graves, as well as some close friends......I stood in the cemetery and thought back to years and years ago......of all the friends I had there.......but now, when I go back home, I don't know a soul........I stood and shed a few tears.....of memories past.
I had one great surprise, though......got to see some old, old friends/school friends who graduated a year behind me....they just happened to be in town.........we had a wonderful visit, lots of hugs, lots of memories shared!

So very nice, Elsie.
I remember spending the whole day at the cemetery where
my grandparents and great grandparents are buried. We decorated
the graves and had a family reunion type picinic with all the aunts and
uncles and cousins. It was a nice time and I have very fond memories of
those days.
