The Vampire Diaries season 3 ended with Alaric dead, but when you have a show like this one, it's not completely impossible to bring the dead back. So will Matt Davis return even though he has another CW shows, Cult, coming up?
Vampire Diaries Season 4 Spoilers
According to Entertainment Weekly, it's likely that "Alaric will be back one way or another," based on what Matt Davis has said on the matter while promoting Cult, which will be joining the primetime schedule in the midseason on the CW. That means his fans will still get a chance to see him next season. Could a return mean a third goodbye scene for Alaric and Jeremy? Those could just end up getting ridiculous if that's the case. That goodbye in "The Departed" was perfect, but that doesn't mean Alaric can't return—just keep goodbyes out of it.
Since Jeremy can see ghosts, they could easily bring Alaric back that way in The Vampire Diaries season 4, even if it's just for one episode. His death was a necessary part of the show, looking forward. They had to do something about those rings and coming back to life. It did end up being an arc that ultimately led to his death, and now Jeremy's going to have to find a way to deal with everything going on now that Elena's becoming a vampire. There would definitely be different feel going into the fourth season with that happening if they still had Alaric around to help them out. That's not to say that Alaric shouldn't come back—because he should—but what's about to happen on Vampire Diaries (Elena's transition) is something that may be more dramatic without him around.
