The U.S. is number 1 in military strength, but over the last 30 years it had fallen out of 1st place in almost everything else.

Thank you for sharing with Watching The Wind Blow By
It is true that they are having problems with day care. They have waiting lists, and the day care staff is the closest thing to the former Nazis, her words not mine...
Now, what kind of a free society, non socialist and free market, could that be? Do we really want such "terrible situation" in USA? How can they run a business?
Well, it may help though that the health care is administered by the government, every one pays into it, and the individual businesses don't have to be worried about health care... They may concentrate on their business, worry about it...
Char, they may build more here, because you are dealing with sheer numbers... However, the American workers in the foreign plants don't have the same benefits as their counter parts in the countries of origin.
It is true that they get a lot of investment, but at what price for us? Foreign investors think the same way as native investors, they will pick the cheapest labor available. It seems that we give them a lot of breaks..
By the way, those countries have health care coverage for their citizens... Their women may not drive, show up public showing their faces, but, at east they don't lose their jobs if they are pregnant, like in the Good Old USA, who is catching up...
Do you realize that we are playing catch up with the world, instead of the world playing catch up with us?
Char, if the foreign companies were not not forced to build their products on American soils, in order to have access to the American market, your "Conservative thinking" would have returned us to the Middle Ages...
"other countries require very nearly all foreign workers, AND making products in their countries".
I don't really get what you mean here. The way I read this is that in other countries, take for instance China, the government is requiring Kohler ( a Wisconsin company ) to make its toilet bowls in China, but they have to use Indian workers?
"We do not. Many of the Asian companies give only the low wage jobs to Americans and save all the upper income jobs and management positions for their people they bring in."
I don't really know what planet you are living in, but in America this is not true. While there is an executive team from the country of origin present, they consult with our high level people here. I am not concerned with the management people at the foreign plants here, they get well paid and they get perks. I am speaking about the regular labor...
"We do nothing about that part, fools that we are. Not so in other countries. yes, we are behind,"
I am sure that the statement is more generated by ignorance rather than malice... In the united Stated States no car is sold outside of the distribution channel. In order for Mercedes to penetrate the market they had to buy Chrysler, and in order to stay after they got here, they had to build the plant...
Why do you think that FIAT bought Chrysler?
Why do you thin Renault bought American Motors?
I see that you keep insisting on this trivial aspect, which by the way, you are far from knowing, but you keep a very healthy distance about the real topics of the article suggested by George...
You can't accuse me of not giving you hooks for discussion on health care, maternity situation and so forth...
Crin, I noticed when I re read that I was not clear. I think, in many cases, we let the foreign interests take advantage of us. For instance, in Michigan they are building 400 homes, a small community. They are going to bring in 6000 people, but require 4000 workers as part of the agreement. Now, that sure sounds like we are getting 4000 jobs, while getting 6000 immigrants, AND they have been promised low cost in-state tuition if the go to school. Now, one would think they will employ at least 2000 of those people in their development, so now we have gotten 2000 jobs, sold our land, used up infrastructure, and given them cheap education for 2000 jobs. Not to mention they will get SS nos. To report their earnings under, entitling them to benefits when they retire someday, and maybe even welfare after the homes are built. It looks like a very bad deal to me. Maybe not, but it sure looks iffy, especially since it brings 6000 more people with what is a temporary job situation, not an ongoing concern. Then it will be another, and another, like we don't have houses coming out our ears now. Things like that make me crazy, it just sounds like we are plain stupid.
Char,
Instead of clearing up my confusion, you are getting me more confused. I don't understand a thing in that tirade about "...they are building 400 homes, a small community. They are going to bring in 6000 people, but require 4000 workers as part of the agreement. Now, that sure sounds like we are getting 4000 jobs, while getting 6000 immigrants, AND they have been promised low cost in-state tuition if the go to school..."
But I guess I will never get it.
I am not bashing the USA, I am just pointing out things that are going wrong, and I wish they did not.
I don't have a Liberal or a Conservative point, I am looking at issues from the practical point of view.
When I came in this country they were Republicans and Democrats. Some of the Democrats were extremely Conservative, and some of the Republicans extremely Liberals. An added check at the already checks and balances. Today we have a bunch of wolves at each other's throats, with the Democrats a little bit milder.
Now, just for the heck of it, tell me how am I bashing the USA,mentioning that in a country famous for inequalities and chauvinism, the women get health care covered by the government, they get all the assistance needed when pregnant and right after delivery, while in America we don't.
That was one of the points of the article... If you think that this is bashing America, you remind me of the Communist propagandist who considered that a genera drought was cause by the Capitalist to sabotage them...
You want to defend America? Then do it the right way. First talk in a manner that we all can understand, then admit where America screwed up, so that we can change things around...
Denial will not score points for you...
I tell you one thing, if those who lead the world right after the Second World War, thought the same way your group is thinking today, Europe, Japan would have been a prison, not what they are today. For sure we would have not envied them for among other things, health care...
Peace Char!
