Palestine comes from word 'philistines'. The land was conquered by many groups over time. When Britian took the Ottoman Empire, they recognized the jewish people's right to the homeland. The British mandate included both a Jewish state and an Arab State, with a partition plan, what we call today a two-state solution. What happened to the two-state solution created by the UN...1947. In 1948 all surrounding states got together and rejected the Palestinian homeland offered. They attacked because they did not want ANY Jewish homeland. Jordan captured East Jerusalem. Israeli's held West Jerusalem.
Jewish state prevailed in the War of Independence 1949, defeating the arabs and signed an armistice treaty ending all hostilities, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan.... The Jordanians renamed Sumaria and Judea, the West Bank. Jordan STILL occupies that land. In 1956, with Russia backing Egypt, Egypt closed all borders to off to Israel, preventing Israel's from getting anything through. October 1956, Israel invaded and captured the Gaza Strip, the Sinai Pennisula, Judea, Sumaria, and the Golan Heights, all because they were being choked to death. The UN told Israel to STOP, Israel not only stopped but gave the Sinai Pennisula BACK to Egypt, providing that Egypt would open up the borders for Israel.
In 1964, the PLO was formed. Their goal: Destruction of the state of Israel, replacing it with an independent palestinian state, from the Jordan River to the Meditteranean, leaving nothing left for Israel. 1967, Jordan, Syria, and Egypt attempted an attack on Israel at their borders. Israel launched a pre-emptive strike defeating the opposing forces, capturing the Gaza Strip, the Sinai Penninsula a SECOND time, the West Bank. They took E.
Jerusalem from Jordan, uniting their capitol city, the Golan Heights, and 75 miles away from the capital in Syria. In that 6 day war, Israel won back its homeland and then some, from the arabs with their 230,000 troops prepared to destroy Israel.
They gave some of the land they conquered BACK AGAIN. In 1973 on Yom Kippur, Egypt once again flooded into the Sinai, as did Syrian forces, outnumbering Israeli defenses. Israel again suceeded in fighting them off and reaching into Syria once more, until Russia and the US demanded a cease fire on October 22, 1973. AGAIN, Israel withdrew from Syria and Egypt. 1979, Camp David, peace treaty signed between Began and Sadat. Agreement included Israel give Sinai back to Egypt, years later gave up Gaza Strip, making compromises and sacrifices for peace. Numerous attempts by the PLO, now the PA failed to destroy Israel.
Calling for Israel to go back to the 1967 lines gives control of water and mountains to those who want to destroy Israel altogether. The PA does not want a two-state solution. They want Israel gone.
