The Kentucky Derby 2012 winner, I'll Have Another, will now head to Baltimore to prepare to "have another" win. Next up in the Triple Crown schedule will be the Preakness Stakes race at Pimlico Race Track in less than two weeks.
According to a Triple Crown schedule, Preakness is up next for the Derby winner, and team. They'll have about 13 days to prepare, as Preakness takes place on May 19th at the Pimlico Race Track. However, once again, I'll Have Another will probably not be the favorite to win, and its odds to pull of a Triple Crown achievement seem even slimmer.
Data from ESPN indicates he is "by far, the Derby winner with the longest odds to complete the Triple Crown sweep." In terms of history, the horse Assualt which won the Derby in 1946 was an 8 to 1 favorite to win that race, and went on to win the Triple Crown. No horse with odds lower than that has ever achieved the feat, and I'll Have Another brought 15 to 1 odds into the Derby.
However, these are the sorts of stories that horse racing, sports fans, and the general public love. Rooting for the underdog has always been fun, so wouldn't it be great to see I'll Have Another pull off this second straight victory? It will depend a lot on who competes, because one horse being decided upon for this next race is Bodemeister. That horse nearly would've been in position for a Triple Crown, if not for a late surge down the stretch from a new hero. So it's quite possible Bob Baffert and Bodemeister will have a loss to avenge at the track in Baltimore in just a few weeks.
The Triple Crown Schedule continues on May 19th, 2012 with the Preakness Stakes, and then finishes on June 9th with the Belmont Stakes in New York. Do you think I'll Have Another can win this next race? Will you be watching?
