Movie Review: Stomp The Yard

More than a dance movie. It's a coming-of-age celebration for the human spirit.

DJ(Columbus Short), an amazing underground street dancer, hasn't been in college for a day before he's entranced by the lovely April(Meagan Good). Working as a gardener to pay the bills, DJ doesn't fit in with the wealthier students around campus, but one thing does catch his attention - the rival fraternity competitions known as "stepping." With April's help, DJ learns about the legacy and heritage behind the fraternities and decides to join up. Now part of an official step group, DJ must balance rehearsals, work and school, while at the same time winning the heart of the girl of his dreams. With the National Step Championship drawing closer, DJ must learn to stop dancing as an individual, and to start stepping as a team.

Rated: PG-13 Run Time: 114 Minutes.

We loved this movie. Once it got started even my brother was hooked! Some of the language and dance/stepping scenes may not be appropriate for kids under 13-16 due to some swearing and sexual/dirty dancing scenes. Great movie, wish there was a sequel.

Great movie. Not recommended for audiences under 13, would suggest more like not for younger than 15-16 but it's up to the parents as to what young teens watch.

My wife and daughter liked the movie too, they really like dance type shows and movies. In fact, I think one of them bought it, because it was played quite often for a while there at home. Some of what I've seen of it looked like good choreography.
I'm pretty sure there is a sequel by the way, I'm sure I've seen them watching it too...

It was a great movie and I plan to watch it again sometime. Will have to see if I can find the sequel. The choreography is good, I have a cousin who as much as her mother isn't very happy about it loves break dance and street dance type dances and is actually quite good at it.

Amanda I am so glad you added the comment on your age suggestion for this movie. We do not view anything that has a rating above PG13 in our home. We no longer have kids at home but we use the same values for yourselves. I have come to realize that what we view, read or hear does affect the person we become.

We have turned off movies that are PG13 because they did not meet our standards. I don't want to hear the "F" word in my home and I will not invite it into my home by choice. I do not like nudity either and will turn a movie off if it has it. The movie will be thrown away and never be in my home again.

These are just the standards that we have set for our home. I understand and do not push my standards on others in thier homes.

I don't think I will be viewing this movie and loved the way you presented your review and your additional comment.

We are a little picky at times, we prefer no nudity and as for swearing it has to be minimal, I usually check out what others are saying in reviews on Amazon.com about a movie rated PG 13 or above before I make a decision whether or not to have the library borrow it for us. We're all adults in my family but My parents and I have certain types of preferences and tend to stick to family movies.

Thanks. Some people think we're weird but oh well too bad. My brother( he's 22) has a different opinion of movies because he'd like to watch horror and violent action movies, Mom won't allow horror movies, and as for the violent movies he likes he has to watch them when the rest of us aren't home which little did he realize when he agreed to those terms that it would mean he'd almost never get to watch the kinds of stuff he'd rather watch. He might complain about not liking something but we know part of it's just noise. He loves movies with Steve Martin in them and since they're usually pretty clean movies we try and request those a lot from the library.
