From across the ocean came a cheaper deal

Cheaper labor had been found

Now half a Plant is the new survivor's deal.
the high cost of iron ore and coking coal combined with
the low international demand for, and low price of steel.
Every tonne exported lost $220 for the company:
Now we make steel for the domestic market only,
and do not export any more - that was half the business.
You are correct though: redundancy can be the best thing that ever happened to a worker: it was for me, in the long, the longest run.

I noticed as I traveled with my kids, back and forth to their respective schools, that so many for sale signs were popping up on the properties I passed as I drove along.
That was just the beginning and as the steel mill declined in force and finally in being, peoples' lives were being uprooted and destined to complete change from what we had all been experiencing in our comfortable lives.
We were fortunate in that my husband had worked enough years to be able to have a pension before the company went completely, but the "out of work," siuations certainly began a different world.
I often thought of writing a story called, "HOUSE FOR SALE," and see, even today, so many signs up. Our situation eventually spread across the U.S. and look at today.
